This terminal type is the phase-out model of the more recent type 889/989. The bores are the same on both terminal types, but the outer diameter on the terminals 896/996 is greater. The rolled labyrinth areas and the two self-sealing labyrinth rings (undercuts for shrinking on of polypropylene) provide for an optimum connection between the terminal and the polypropylene. The total cone area of these battery terminals is rolled for optical reasons and to provide for a long-term protection against oxidation.

The manufacturing process is protected by two patents.
